Stretching to Sketch Challenge Week Three!

This weeks challenge was just that for me. This was a tough one. And I know I probably say that each week! I worked on this one for quite a few hours. The hardest parts were again the hands and this time a side profile of her face. I had never done that before. I also tried hard to get her torso to appear as if it was slightly turned which I think I did achieve.

I really enjoyed this one once I got past my initial frustration. I wanted to throw in the towel at first. I am now realizing that sketching takes time. Time to adjust shading and proportions. It is a process. Things such as this is where I see my lack of patience truly show up! I need to take time and enjoy the process more instead of rushing to get done. I get too excited to see it finished!

Be on the look out for Kelly's blog post today when she shares all the results for this week!

  4. Cathy, that is a wonderful job. Wow! Great work. Oh, I bought some of those graphite pencils and they are great. But....I accidentally dropped one on my tile floor and it broke? How weird. It broke like in 3 pieces and I had no idea that it would break. I can still use the 3 pieces but it shocked me the way it broke. Oh well. Again, great work!

  5. Wow, this is great Cathy! I love the shading--I like to sketch with graphite--it's very relaxing to me, but I know what you mean--I want it to be done before it's ready to be done.

  6. Great job Cathy! I really like the way you shaded her skin. It looks very soft. I sometimes rush, too. When I take my time and get into it, is when it comes together. Beautiful!

  7. Dear Cathy,
I absolutely love this sketch! I love the human body (and I also like pencil sketchs).
Perhaps that's why Edgar Degas is one of my favorite painters ;) He painted a lot of nudes, ballerinas, and horses (3 subjects I like). Please continue experimenting with the human body, you're doing a wonderful job!

  8. Cathy,
I think ya did a wonderful job. I know ya not gonna like me for saying this, lol. If ya having trouble with hands, the easiest way to help perfect that skill is to keep drawing hands. I know ya making a face at me and sticking ya toungue out. lol But I was told in order for us to perfect any skill it takes practice. So practice hands, flip through magazines and start drawing them till ya feel comfortable with them. That's what my friend Less did. In fact she even asked friends to send pictures of their hands for her to draw. Just a suggestion. I really do like how ya captured her half turn and the shading is nice. I'm working on shadings myself. Hope ya having a good day. Hugs, Poe
